Sagotrasagotra, Geologist with the Geological Survey of India

What’s your job like?

Being part of GSI is a totally new experience. We are exposed to much fieldwork. I have traveled wide around India during trainee days and learned a diverse geological regime. I love continuing this spirit by accepting challenges.

What’s a typical day like?

To visit serene places at the interior of villages is awesome! People sometimes ask, “Why do you need this stone?” or “It looks of no value.” I remember when I got a rock which I thought was a meteorite but realized it wasn’t later.

What’s fun?

It is adventurous to move one place to another while doing geology.  While tourists go to see limestone caves as fun, we geologists see the history of its deposition and calcium oxide (CaO) value for industry use.

What’s challenging?

To understand the mystery of the rock formation which happened millions of year ago — when no one was seeing it.

What’s your advice to students?

Being a geologist, one must love nature’s play from sediment to Himalaya building.
