My initial advice would be to subscribe to key mailing lists, such as Cryolist (http://cryolist.org/) and Geomorph-list (http://www.geomorph.org/pb/pblist.html). There are often job advertisements that are circulated that might be of interest.

Otherwise, you could search academic job websites – in the UK we have sites like http://www.jobs.ac.uk, on which most universities advertise current vacancies.

If there is a specific topic that you are interested in, perhaps try contacting researchers directly using their institutional e-mail address and with a focused subject line in the e-mail that they won’t think is spam and simply pass over. Take some time to (briefly) introduce yourself, tell them a bit about your research/professional work to date, topics that you are interested in, and ask whether they have any current projects or future research plans that you might be suitable for. It would be useful to name-drop a couple of their publications that you have read and found interesting to show that you are genuinely familiar with their research.

You could also do a Google search for postdoctoral scholarships designed to support applicants from overseas (assuming that you wish to work abroad!) – these typically require you to have the support of a host institution, so take the time to do some homework on schemes that might be appropriate before contacting people directly to ask whether they would be interested in helping you prepare an application. As an example, Google ‘Royal Society Newton International Fellowship’ to see what’s usually involved…

Good luck!
